What could be a better time to share the past few pageant weekends with you than a three hour flight delay in the Vermont airport!? Here are a few random shots from the Miss Connecticut USA & Teen USA as well as the Miss Vermont USA & Teen USA Pageants where I work as the Director of Administration and the Contestant Coordinator for Pageant Associates. Winners of the pageants include Marie Lynn Piscitelli as our 2012 Miss CT USA, Logan West as the 2012 Miss CT Teen USA, Jamie Lynn Dragon as the current 2012 Miss VT USA & Karsen Jaleen Woods as the 2012 Miss VT Teen USA. A hair bun is one of my favorite styles to wear. Whether I'm slicking my hair back for a dressy classic bun or pulling my wispy baby hairs down around my face and neck for a fun messy look, the hair bun is easy to do. This trend is growing by the moment and has been seen in both street style and celebrity fashion. Now there is an even easier way to create this look and costs only about $3.00 online or in beauty supply stores. Also, I have 7 steps below to create your own homemade donut bun.

The Donut Bun: HOMEMADE 

If you want to skip the online shopping and make one on your own right now, here's 7 easy how to steps! 

1. supplies: scissors, 1 tube sock, 1 silk dress sock

2. cut feet from both socks

3. from the cut end of the tube sock, roll sock toward it's opposite end until you've made a donut then pull the end over the donut

4. feed the dress sock through the donut 

5. begin rolling the dress sock over the tube sock starting with the cut end

6. put the end of the dress sock over the entire donut

7. hair spray and you're finished!

Want these curls? 

Follow these few easy steps!

1. After washing, dry hair fairly straight and add heat protectant on ends. 

(I used John Frieda's Frizz-Ease Thermal Protection)

2. Section hair into three (or as many as desired depending on thickness) rows and curl each beginning at your roots. 

(I used a 1 1/2 inch iron, Jilbere de Paris, but depending on the length and thickness of your hair you can choose which works best.)

3. Tease hair around the crown of your head for volume.

4. With a wide tooth comb, lightly brush through the curls.

5. Spray entire head with spritzer. Then with hairspray, spray around the frame of your face. 

(I used Biolage Firm Hold Finishing Spritz and TRESemme Tres Two extra hold Hairspray)

Easy to do and a great natural look.

GET THE LOOK -

Prep strands with Aveda’s Volumizing Tonic, blow-out, and add workable texture with Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray. 

Pull hair into two side-by-side ponytails, with the elastic wrapped just a couple inches away from the ends. 

Then tie both sections over one another into a knot, adding bobby pins for security. 

Continue to tie knots on top of one another and adding bobby pins with each layer until you’re finished. 

If you have two hanging bits left over, which Ryan terms “dog ears,” use forceps or pliers to pull one end through the other.

“You can find a lot of beauty uses for stuff you buy at Home Depot,” said Ryan.

How-to with MAC products:

Eye

MAC pro clove powder blush, rule eye shadow and deep dark mineralize skin finish natural – mixed and blended over the eyes and out towards the temples. 

Eye shadows in omega (for blondes) or espresso (for brunettes) – used to fill in the brows where necessary.

Lip

Select moisture cover concealer – applied where needed. 

Studio fix powder plus foundation – all over the face. 

Pro clove powder blush, rule eye shadow and deep dark mineralize skin finish natural – mixed and blended across the cheeks, deep below the cheekbones and around the temples to create a strong orange toned bronze contour.

Face

MAC pro orange cream colour base – pressed onto the lip for a matte stain.

The Side Twist 

The Tip:

Capture the romantic style at Sophie Theallet's fall show by starting with a volumizing cream or spray, then adding a dry shampoo to create a matte texture. Next, backcomb the hair at the top of the head, then separate into top and bottom sections in back. Secure the top section loosely with a ponytail holder, then divide the bottom into two sections. Twist the right section around the ponytail (over to the left side) and secure with bobby pins, then twist the left bottom section over the ponytail and secure with bobby-pins. Finish with hairspray. For extra volume, tease both left and right bottom sections before twisting and pinning.

The Loose Knot

The Tip: 

Reconstruct the soft, feminine bun at Jason Wu by applying a glossing straightener or cream to damp hair then blow-dry with a flat brush. Pull hair into a loose ponytail at the nape of the neck. Wrap a long bungee elastic around the ponytail, creating a criss-cross pattern from top to bottom, then twist into a flat chignon and secure with bobby-pins. Finish with hairspray.

The Toosie Roll

The Tip: 

An offshoot of the Sophie Theallet side twist, this look is perfect for shoulder or chin-length hair. Use a volumizing or thickening spray, and tease your hair at the roots. Pull the upper half of the hair back and secure into a loose ponytail. Roll the ponytail up toward the ponytail holder and secure with bobby-pins. Spray with a strong hold hairspray.
